Welcome to St Martin Depores Parish Lukome. We are happy
to have you visit our website. We believe and hope that you will find the
website interesting and nurturing in your journey of faith, charity and
spirituality with us.
St Martin Depores Parish-Lukome is located 15km North of Gulu Town in Northern Uganda-East Africa.
We are called under the patronage of St. Martin De Porres to
care and visit one another with God’s word and sacraments of Love.
St. Martin Depores parish started as a chaplaincy in the formation house of the religious brothers of St. Martin Depores Congregation. These religious brothers have their formation house in Lukome up to date though terribly destroyed during the 22 years old war in Northern Uganda. Due to the great pastoral need of Christians who used to flock the chaplaincy for the word of God and sacraments, it was deemed necessary to open a parish in this location called St. Martin Depores Parish –Lukome.
The parish was opened in 1982. From the time of its opening, the parish enjoyed its peace and stable growth only for four (4) years. Thereafter, it has been seriously affected by the civil war that has ravaged northern Uganda from 1986 and which destabilized and greatly destroyed the entire social, economic and structural set up of the people in Northern Uganda.
At the moment, the parish is terribly vandalized after being deserted for 20 years because of insecurity. The Parish priest commutes from the Cathedral Parish which is 18 km away simply because the Rectory is completely destroyed in need of massive rennovation.
Our Parish has nine (9) outstations (Chapels) with only one permanent church building. The christians in rest of the chapels pray either under the tree or in the open classrooms in schools. The main Parish Church building is condemned by the engineers and is unsafe for conducting services. We pray outside under trees every Sunday.
Despite our lack of means, we celebrate Sunday in a very happy and exciting way. We have a very lively Christian community with very lively and exciting Eucharistic celebrations of Mass every Sunday.
Our ten (10) catechists conduct prayer services in the absence of priests in our Chapels on Sundays.
Our Christian community shares in the challenges that people in the Archdiocese of Gulu face as a result of many years of war that has impoverished the people. With many people struggling just for survival, we are sustained by our faith in the face of lack of means to support and facilitate our parish programs and activities. It may take us a while, but we shall work at building our parish (see pictures)
